Water system sustainability partner.
SHED works with Tanzania's rural water authorities, including RUWASA, on the long-term sustainability of community water systems. Water infrastructure in Roche, Nyambogo and Burere was developed through years of partnership among communities, SHED, Village Life and Engineers Without Borders, but construction is only the beginning of a sustainable system.
SHED remains involved when systems require repairs, technical reassessment, stronger management arrangements or integration with government water structures. We work with village committees, engineers and public authorities to identify practical ways to keep water flowing and to clarify responsibility for operation and maintenance.
This continued involvement is one of SHED's most important contributions. Outside organizations can fund or design infrastructure, but SHED is still present years later when maintenance problems arise and when local committees need help connecting to government systems.
