Our Work Together
Engineers Without Borders has been a major technical partner in SHED's water and infrastructure work, particularly through the University of Cincinnati chapter. The relationship has included years of engineering engagement in Roche, Nyambogo and Burere addressing practical infrastructure challenges in health, education and community development: boreholes, water distribution and storage, sanitation and system improvements, technical assessments, maintenance planning and school construction efforts.
Key Projects or Contributions
SHED's contribution begins before an engineer arrives. We work with communities to identify priorities, organize village committees, collect local information, coordinate access to sites and public authorities, and help determine what a technically sound project must also do to function socially and financially. During implementation, SHED supports procurement, local labor, contractor coordination, budgeting and communication between engineers and community stakeholders. After construction, SHED continues working with water committees, village leaders and government authorities on maintenance, revenue, repairs and sustainability.
Why the Partnership Mattered
Engineering solutions can fail when designed without local ownership, when no institution manages repairs, or when communication between international designers and rural communities breaks down. SHED provides the long-term local presence needed to bridge those gaps — the result is infrastructure embedded in a community structure capable of using and maintaining it.
