Our Work Together
SHED became the official partner of GlobeMed at Duke University in 2015. The partnership focused on schistosomiasis control and community health, building on earlier work — including a 2013 Duke student health-education campaign on schistosomiasis and intestinal worms in Roche, Burere and Nyambogo — in communities where SHED and Village Life were already active. Duke students supported fundraising and awareness while SHED provided the local program structure needed to reach schools and communities in Rorya District.
Key Projects or Contributions
Local implementation involved school relationships, health education, coordination with communities and health authorities, identification of target populations and follow-through after visiting teams left. SHED integrated the program into existing health and community relationships rather than treating it as a short-term university project.
Why the Partnership Mattered
The formal GlobeMed relationship concluded after Tanzania expanded government-led mass treatment in the region. The partnership remains an example of how SHED can help a university-based organization move from student interest and fundraising to responsible field implementation that complements rather than competes with public health systems.
