Our Work Together
Bugando Medical Centre was a central Tanzanian clinical and research partner in SHED's Burkitt lymphoma work. Bugando provided major referral, oncology, pathology and laboratory capacity, while SHED contributed field leadership, case identification, rural clinical connections and implementation in Shirati and the wider Lake Zone. Within EMBLEM, the two institutions formed complementary parts of the Tanzania research structure, with Bugando's specialist medical capacity connected to SHED's community and field network.
Key Projects or Contributions
SHED helped bridge the distance between rural communities and a major referral hospital. Suspected cases could be identified through local health networks and connected to specialist evaluation and treatment, while research activities could be coordinated across sites. SHED also supported the administrative and financial movement of resources connected to cancer research and treatment work.
Why the Partnership Mattered
A local NGO cannot replace a referral hospital, and a referral hospital cannot by itself maintain deep relationships across remote communities. SHED's strength is creating the operational link between the two.
