NIMR played an important role in the regulatory and ethical framework for SHED's research activities, particularly EMBLEM. Conducting international human-subject research in Tanzania required national ethical review, continuing approval and compliance with Tanzanian research requirements.
SHED worked through those processes as part of the Tanzania research team. This experience is significant because research implementation requires more than scientific interest; it requires an institution capable of preparing documentation, maintaining approvals, communicating with investigators and ensuring that field activity remains within national requirements.
SHED's experience with NIMR oversight strengthens its ability to serve future research partners that need a local organization familiar with the practical and regulatory demands of conducting health research in Tanzania.
